How to make a dog for your hurdy gurdy
Просмотров 52510 месяцев назад
This is a long comprehensive video about making a dog (chien). I made this video using simple tools that I could find online without a work bench and without power tools. I want others to be able to make a dog without the need for a lot of expense or a large space for their tools. I made a few mistakes as I went such as saying the strings vibrate 1000's of time per "second" when I meant to say ...
7 cut dog - Tools

These are the tools I have found work best for me when I make a dog. PLEASE PROTECT YOUR FINGERS!! I have made hundreds of dogs and have cut my fingers countless times. If you can protect your thumb and fingers, please do. I'm the type of guy who just grabs the super glue to glue myself back together. Please be careful if you use my method.

Rebuild of a new Chinese made hurdy gurdy

This came to me as unplayable and needed a lot of work to get into a playable condition. The video shows the work that needed to be performed on it just to make it good enough to use as a starter instrument. I didn't bother doing any finish repair (which would be a nightmare on these) and simply replaced the parts that were a problem. Unless you have a full working woodshop, $1000 you want to t...
The Basics of Playing the Hurdy Gurdy
Просмотров 3 тыс.3 года назад
We discuss playing the coup, left hand position and movement, and briefly (very briefly) go over a tune. It is important to have some foundation to start your playing with. Hopefully this will serve as a basic foundation for those getting started. I stress in this video that the best way to proceed and become successful is to find a great teacher to help you learn and keep you moving forward. Y...

The basics of getting started on your hurdy gurdy. How to hold it, how to strap it on, how to sit, how to tune, etc. All the things that seem daunting in the beginning are really just the things you haven't been taught. This video hopes to address the basics of how to get started and what to do to successfully get beyond the first steps. T-shirt art by Brian Sago
History of the Hurdy Gurdy

Who invented the hurdy gurdy and why? No one knows for sure, and they are likely to never know. We discuss the progression of the instrument, its styles through history, and how they differ from one region to the next. This is not comprehensive and some of my information may be out of date so enjoy but don't get wrapped up in it. I am not a researcher I'm an enthusiast hoping to answer some bas...

Coups 4 to 3 practice
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.5 лет назад
A fast dirty video to show the way to learn a bit more fluidity in the way that you play the coups. The idea is to practice the coups in rotation 4 to 3 to 4 to 3 etc. Apparently the video on my phone and the camera didn't match so half my head is in the whole thing, you want to look at the hurdy gurdy not my face anyway. Have fun. Practice, practice, practice.

A fast dirty video to show the way to learn coup de 3 right side up and upside down. A step toward a coup de 6 (a small step but every little bit helps). Apparently the video on my phone and the camera didn't match so half my head is in the whole thing, you want to look at the hurdy gurdy not my face anyway. Have fun. Practice, practice, practice.

Thanks for sharing Scott. Great ambiance. ❤ Do you know the name of the band?
It's Duo Nello :) if you could mention it in the title it would be awesome !
@@DuoNello Scott Gayman is the only one who can do it. ;) By the way, is it an original piece? Est-ce une composition? J'aime beaucoup.
I just bought a hurdy gurdy that's in great shape but has been left in a box for 20 years, and this video is fantastic and makes me feel like maybe I /can/ get it into playing shape. I've wanted a hurdy gurdy for approximately forever, but my experience on one could be counted easily in minutes. Thanks for putting the information in such an easy to understand format!
How did you get the wheel out to replace it, did you take the back off? If so, how did you do it?
Nice video Evil Scott 🤗
Regarding intonation: Just-Schugk or Just-Barbour? And thanks for such a wonderful set of videos!
It looks great, but the video seems to have lost its audio….
Thanks Scott, its very helpfull
Is there a link for the adjustable bridge? I can't seem to find them.
The best tutorial on replacing the cotton on a Hurdy Gurdy, I've seen so far!
What about 2 slot for two dog positions?
Thank you so much for your content Scott! Always so usefull and illustrative for the practice 😌

Wow, this is maybe the best mainentance video I've seen here!
5:53 … personally I prefer the hair of the dog! 😉😆 The tail tenon… I’ve often wondered if the tail does double duty, not only fitting into the mortise of the bridge but also as acting as a bit of a counterweight to the balance of the chien. Is there any correlation to responsiveness to the length (shorter or longer) of the tail? 1:15:05 … or “phat” 😆 1:44:10 .. another consideration would be the soundboard surface itself. After 5 or 6 years playing my Hubbert gurdy the dog had dug a tiny depression into the softer spruce of the soundboard changing the sound and response. I had Alden and Cali Hackman inlay a square of ebony underneath area of the foot… problem solved and the sound was noticeably crisper… Another consideration…some players (myself included) use graphite on the tail to further ease the pivoting…
Love the video, thanks! I'm kinda curious if anyone has input on the best way to find your keys without looking. Is this just an experience thing, or what? I find myself counting keys from the bottom to find my starting point on a song. Full disclosure - I'm a newb with literally 1 hour's experience so far.
Practice. Then some more practice. I played the piano until I was about 17, but then didn't touch any instrument for 40 years, so they keyboard element has been easy, and working out the notes for a new tune is usually straightforward. As a former pianist I found fingering a little tricky (I kept wanting to use my thumb and be able to cross over it with other fingers). I sometimes have to figure out the most ergonomic usage and experiment with different fingerings. Also, there's nothing wrong with looking at the ends of the keys as you play. And find tunes you like to practice with. Working them out is fun and you will enjoy yourself more.
As much of an annoyance HGSO are, they are great teaching tools for proper craftsmenship and why certain things are done
I'm not a closet HG player, I'm at the other wrong end of the spectrum. I'll watch videos, etc., forever before I decide I may want to do this, then I'll spend another forever researching what to get. Learning is good, but sooner or later you've got to get things moving ;)
Phenolic resin is a useful material in general. I suppose their thought is it was cheap, easily machined, and would be stable across temperature and humidity changes. But it is also hard, smooth, and sort of waxy so I can see where it's not at all a good choice. It wouldn't be worth the effort but I wonder how it would work to cut the original wheel down and add a band of wood around it. A very informative walk through of all the things wrong with it as purchased and the work required to make it usable. Thank you.
Exactly what I thought, turn it down in a lathe and glue a veneer on it.
I think your wrong about north African roots for hurdy gurdy ,its probably invented from the pythagorean monochord by the catholic church ie a clever monk, one reason being the organistrum was probably a diatonic instrument ,as were many of its early developments ie symphony, hurdy gurdy, the second row of keys ,which were added later to make it a chromatic instrument apparently were a idea borrowed by the crusaders after they had encountered the Arab music of sharps, flats ,hidden grace notes etc.. and imported that idea of musical scale into European instruments including the hurdy gurdy,in fact the Arabs borrowed a lot of their musical ideas from the romans who borrowed them from tne Greeks, but these ideas were lost to Europe after the romans pulled out of Europe, due to barbarian domination whereas the Arabs, preserved them,!
Have you come across chien that have 2, vertical ,grooves in the chien housing ,so that you can reposition the chien, into a ,nearer the wheel or furter away from the wheel position,in order to vary chien response or sensitivity ,other than adjusting the tyrant,, and does it work?
Very informative about hurdy shapes.
How many strings did you have already playing at the video? In my instrument I think I can't play with four strings on (for example) making a coup only with three finguers! May be is a consequence of a bad technique of mine. 😅
This makes perfect sense to me. The term "coups" is short for "coups de poignet" or "hit of the wrist" indicating a rapid striking motion from the wrist. It's almost a rediscovery of what may have been the original technique that gave us the term in the first place. Fascinating!
I will try this definitely
Hi Scott-- I am working with a very similar HGSO which belongs to a friend. I haven't seen an easy way to change the wheel. Am I correct in thinking you had to remove the back, or perhaps the top, in order to make the change? Thanks for the wealth of useful info in this video. I have forwarded the link to the owner of the HGSO.
I got a cheaper one to practice and learn on. It does not have the belt pegs. can I play it reasonably well without the belt or should I see about getting belt pegs added?
Really mesmerizing tune! What tune is that? And in what style of playing? (or is he just riffing!?)
Thank you.
Thank you for the information!
I do love the sound of a gurdy being tuned. I was at some early Nigel Eaton gigs and there was something magical about the way he did it - especially when he switched in his chorus pedal.
This has puzzled me for decades - it really doesn't cost much more to build a solid design than a crap design of any product. I'm not talking exotic finishes or fancy features, just four wheels on the wagon. If this had simply been done right I'm sure a lot of folks would have overlooked the finish for a decent beginners instrument. I know I would.
They are produced dirt cheap by people who had no idea how these things should be done, then sold to ebay/alinbaba resellers that try to make money by inflating the price 4x. It's more a decoration than anything else.
Very typical of the Chinese for some reason on many products, they often get the basic construction right but then there's some things that are wrong or just bad quality, like making a nice machined aluminium part and then using totally crap screws or having one dimension just slightly wrong etc. Often these problems can be rather easily fixed and the result will be a nice product but why don't they do them right from the beginning?
Studying in advance. My Dakota Strings / HurdyGurdy USA tenor flickertail has shipped and should be on Big Island (Hawaii Island) by the end of this week. Thanks Scott!
Is that really your last name!?
Very helpful, thank you. 👍
I read, can't remember where, that a cork can be held lightly against the turning wheel to remove excess rosin, it worked ! Anyone else use this method?
Uau, very tanks for lessons!!
I have a hurdy gurdy for more than one year but I see I can still learn basics! Thanks, Scott!
god bless you i was struggling a lot with this
Outstanding !!
Thanks! really helpful!
So 40 or 50 hours to fix it, how much do you charge an hour for that labour? So some mug ends up buying it twice or thrice over!
I did the work for free because the 14 year old kid wanted to learn and I wanted to help him
@@fahnreich Fair play to you, not many would do that.
@@fahnreich Kudos
Thank you Scott, does that mean I don't need liquid rosin on the string? That would be a relief.
Hello ! i'm not speak inglish, i'm sorry. Hurdy guirdy good (ou) not good? Shop eBay ? Do you have a link to buy it? how many euros? Thank you!!
Not good
He’s very talented however, the men talking above him show a mean spirited lack of respect. As a musician, I appreciate it when people listen and show respect rather than trying to talk as loud as they can over my music. I’ve tried to listen to vids of this young man and I was sorely distracted at the BIG mouth in the background.
When your party has a high-level bard and he vanquishes his enemies by shredding.
this hurdy gurdy is actually $60 on etsy and the only problem I had was the wheel
It's definitely not $60 😂
It's probably not the same instrument but if you paid $60 for it you paid exactly what it is worth
The only $60 gurdy I know of is the Ugears hurdy gurdy which is more of an art piece that can be played. Probably sounds better than the original version of this one.
Gotta say that guitar-like "sunburst" finish is pretty awful!! Nice job upgrading it to a reasonably sounding playable instrument....
Best tutorial ever, not just for this but in general just the best tutorial I've seen for anything. So clear and detailed!
Where do you buy these things... they are awesome!
